Lambeth Youth Council is a group of elected young people to fulfil the roles of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Member of the UK Youth Parliament and Youth Councillors. They are joined by a number of Youth Advisors and Youth Representatives. Eligible young people can join the Youth Council as an Advisor or a Representative, they can also run for election to serve a two-year term as Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Member of the UK Youth Parliament or Youth Councillor at the election cycle.
An Executive Chair is appointed from the current members to coordinate the executive. Specifically, to officiate meetings, manage the agenda, ensure effective communication and maintain the high standards of the Youth Council.
Youth Mayor is the leader of the Youth Council and continues to represent young people at civic events and consultations. The Youth Mayor sets up projects, allocates the Youth Mayor’s Fund, meets with MPs and Councillors and highlights issues and opportunities that affect young people. The Youth Mayor and Deputy Youth Mayor work with Youth Councillors to devise a Youth Mayor Strategy and is supported by Youth Mayor Advisors to carry out this work.
Youth Councillors have a focus on specific issues. They have or develop expertise in their field and represent young people at appropriate meetings and consultations. They meet with Councillors, MPs, Service providers, authorities and other groups ensuring a two-way dialogue. Youth Councillors each head up a small team of Youth Advisors to carry out this work.
The Member of UK Youth Parliament is a national representative of local young people and works with the Youth Mayors and Councillors to ensure young people’s involvement in decision-making. Locally, the MYP leads a small team of Democracy Champions to promote participation among young people in Lambeth.
Ex-officio Members can attend Youth Council meetings, receive agendas, minutes, papers and reports. These members do not vote in meetings. Ex-officio members are required by virtue of their position or accountability for the Youth Council. These are usually staff and councillors.
The Advisory Group
Youth Advisors and Youth Mayor Advisors work with Youth Councillors and Youth Mayor respectively to get a better understanding of issues affecting young. They help with the planning and delivery of special events, undertake research and promote the work of the Youth Council. They are coordinated by the Youth Councillors and Mayor and carry out work in specific areas.
Democracy Champions support the Member of the Youth Parliament to ensure young people in Lambeth are involved in decision making. They work on special projects to support initiatives in Lambeth that encourage greater democracy and political awareness in Lambeth.
Youth Advisors may be co-opted onto the Executive to perform the role similar to a Youth Councillor, where they lead a department or project.
